• Special Education

    When a student experiences academic or behavioral concerns in school they are referred to the building support team to discuss possible intervention strategies to support your child. This process attempts multiple, monitored interventions at 8-10 week intervals to ensure we, as a school district, have made every attempt to intervene on behalf of your child. If the interventions have been unsuccessful your child may be referred to the Committee on Special Education for an educational evaluation. Parents may also request an evaluation in writing, but as a district we are still bound to attempt interventions before a student can be identified as having a disability.

    Committee on Special Education

    The Committee on Special Education is responsible for determining a student as having an educational disability. The committee recommends services and placements that will provide your child with an education that enhances and supplements his/her abilities. The initial committee that determines eligibility consists of the Director of Special Education, possibly Building Principal, a regular and special education teacher serving the student, a school psychologist, service providers that may have performed assessments for your student, and the school physician (if requested). 

    CSE/CPSE Meetings and School Delay/Closing

    • If there is a 2-hour delay, middle and high school meetings will start at 10 a.m. and elementary meetings will start at 11 a.m. Meetings that occur before those times will be rescheduled.
    • If school closes, all meetings are canceled and will be rescheduled.

    Self-Review of Indicator 4A and 4B:
    During the 2020-2021 school year, the District completed a self-review of data as related to the suspension of students with disabilities during the 2019-2020 school year. This review included an internal review of our practices, protocols, and processes regarding the discipline of students with disabilities. As a result of the review, the District made adjustments to these processes to ensure full compliance with State regulations. Specifically, the District developed an updated note taking system to assure that CSE minutes clearly document discussion. In addition there is an adjusted communication protocol for suspensions of students with disabilities to ensure that parents and guardians are provided with NYSED Procedural Safeguards when removals constitute a disciplinary change of placement.
