DMK Students Bring Art and Culture to Life Through ‘Fiercely Frida’ Painting Experience

Students in Michele Gowans’ Spanish classes at Dennis M. Kenney Middle School recently had the opportunity to combine creativity with cultural learning during a unique after-school painting event.
Using “Painting to Gogh” kits, students created their own versions of “Fiercely Frida,” a vibrant tribute to iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her famous self-portraits. The artwork features Frida adorned with a crown of soft, colorful blooms and her signature bold brow; serving as a celebration of individuality, strength, and self-expression.
Prior to the event, students had been studying Frida Kahlo as part of their Spanish curriculum, exploring her life, artistic style, and cultural impact. The painting session provided a hands-on extension of that learning, allowing students to connect more deeply with the material in an engaging and memorable way.
Throughout the evening, students followed step-by-step guidance while also adding their own personal touches, making each painting a unique reflection of the artist behind it. The experience emphasized that art is not only about technique, but also about self-reflection and embracing what makes each person different.
