Food Service Director

Start Date: June 1, 2026 (flexible)

Salary: $85,000 – $95,000 (commensurate with experience)

The Hannibal Central School District is seeking a dynamic and experienced Food Service Director to lead and manage the district’s comprehensive school nutrition program. This leadership position oversees the planning, administration, and daily operation of food service programs serving approximately 2,000–2,499 meals per day across multiple schools.

Working under the direction of the School Business Administrator, the Food Service Director ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations while providing nutritious, appealing meals that support student health and academic success. The Director supervises cafeteria staff, manages program finances, oversees menu development, and ensures efficient and safe operations across all school kitchens.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and direct the district’s school breakfast and lunch programs in accordance with federal and state guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with the National School Lunch Program and other federal child nutrition programs.
  • Develop menus that meet USDA nutrition standards while incorporating scratch cooking and fresh food preparation where possible.
  • Prepare and manage the annual food service budget and oversee financial accountability.
  • Coordinate purchasing, inventory management, and bid specifications for food and supplies.
  • Supervise Cook-Managers, cooks, and food service workers; support staff training and development, including scratch cooking techniques and standardized recipes.
  • Monitor cafeteria operations to ensure quality food preparation, sanitation, and safety practices.
  • Maintain accurate program records and prepare required reports.
  • Collaborate with administrators, staff, and community partners to support and enhance the school nutrition program.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the professional standards established by the United States Department of Agriculture for school nutrition directors under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Qualified candidates must possess one of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition, dietetics, food service management, hospitality management, culinary arts, business administration, or a closely related field; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant school nutrition program experience; OR
  • Associate’s degree in a related field and one year of relevant school nutrition program experience. Relevant experience includes work within USDA child nutrition programs such as the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Summer Food Service Program, or Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Additional Requirements

  • Food safety training within five years prior to employment or within 30 days of hire.
  • Completion of at least 12 hours of annual professional development related to school nutrition programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing multi-site school nutrition programs
  • Experience with school nutrition software and reporting systems
  • ServSafe certification or equivalent food safety credential
  • Experience implementing scratch cooking programs or fresh food initiatives in school cafeterias
  • Strong financial management and staff leadership experience

  • Make a difference in a student's life as a tutor! Zoom and in-person opportunities are available. Rates vary depending on certification and academic credits: 

    • Certified Teacher: $45.46 per hour
    • Certified TA or tutor with 60 college credit hours: $25 per hour 
    • Tutor with 100 college credit hours: $35 per hour 
  • There is a vacancy for a cleaner/custodian within the district. A cleaner is responsible for the effective performance of standard cleaning tasks and techniques, which follow a well-established routine. Cleaners play a vital role in making our schools a clean and orderly place for students and staff. The work is done under the general supervision of a higher level cleaner (Crew Leader) and/or custodial supervisor (Night Supervisor). Requirements: a High School Diploma or GED. 

  • Grounds workers perform routine manual grounds and maintenance tasks, including the operation and maintenance of grounds equipment. This position requires some knowledge of grounds and maintenance techniques and processes. The duties of this position are performed under the direct supervision of the daytime supervisor. Assignments are outlined in detail, and inspected on a periodic basis. Depending on weather and activities, employees in this class may be required to alter shift hours depending on operational needs. Requirements: a High School Diploma or GED.

  • Have you ever considered becoming a teaching assistant? Teaching Assistants work to support our students and teachers throughout the day in many different ways. This is a certified position where you would need to meet the following requirements:

    • Have a HS diploma
    • Take 2 courses online (one is free, one you pay for). Financial assistance may be available.
    • DASA course at BOCES (~$100). Financial assistance may be available.
    • State Teaching Assistant test at any location (~$100). Financial assistance may be available.
    • Create a TEACH account (Pay $35 to apply for your certification and be sure to submit all documentation).
