Kaufman Serves as First Student Representative on HCSD Board of Education

The Hannibal Central School District welcomed senior Nicholas Kaufman as its first-ever student representative to the Board of Education.
Kaufman serves as a non-voting, ex-officio member, a role now required under New York State law that took effect July 1. The legislation calls for school districts to include a student representative on their boards to ensure that student voices are part of local educational discussions.
Kaufman said he was eager to step into the leadership role and represent his peers.
“I wanted to be a leader,” Kaufman said. “I feel like every student’s voice needs to be heard, so I felt like this would be a good opportunity to do that.” In his position, Kaufman provides a monthly student board report and offers input when the board seeks a student perspective on district matters. “If the BOE needs a student’s perspective or an opinion, I am happy to offer it,” he said.
Kaufman plans to enter the military after graduation and said he hopes this experience will help him strengthen his leadership skills.
Superintendent Christopher A. Staats said the district is proud to have Kaufman serve in this historic role.
“Nicholas has shown great maturity, initiative, and a sincere desire to represent his classmates,” Staats said. “Having a student voice at the table provides valuable perspective and helps ensure our decisions continue to reflect what’s best for students.”
District leaders said they look forward to Kaufman’s continued contributions throughout the school year as the district embraces this new opportunity for student engagement and leadership.
