Forecast calls for fun weather lesson at DMK

Sixth graders at Dennis M. Kenney Middle School got a front-row seat to the science of weather when NewsChannel 9 meteorologist Kate Thornton recently visited.
Thornton, a familiar face to Central New York viewers, led students through an engaging lesson on weather patterns, forecasting, and the tools meteorologists use to track storms and predict conditions. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, explore real-world applications of science concepts, and check out some demonstrations.
“We’re always looking for ways to connect classroom learning to the world beyond school,” said teacher Katie Shortslef. “Having a professional like Kate share her expertise not only makes science exciting, but also shows students the many career paths their learning can lead to.”
Thornton noted she has a passion for science education and community outreach, and frequently stops by schools to meet young learners and spark curiosity about the world around them.
