School Meals: Helping Build a Healthier Student Body

The Food Services Department recognizes the important connection between a healthy diet and a student’s ability to learn effectively and achieve academic success. As part of our commitment to student wellness, we ensure that all menus meet USDA nutritional guidelines tailored for each grade level.

Our meals are thoughtfully planned to support healthy eating habits. They are designed to meet standards for sodium, calories, saturated fat, and trans fat, while offering balanced portions of grains and proteins throughout the week.

School meals are built around five key food components: Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Protein, and Milk. Each day, students are offered a variety of choices from each category, including fresh fruits and vegetables—often locally grown when available and affordable. Menus also include whole grains, lean protein options, and low-fat or fat-free milk.

We regularly analyze our menus to ensure they continue to meet all current federal nutrition standards. Our goal is to provide meals that are not only nutritious and compliant, but also enjoyable and supportive of lifelong healthy habits.

 

Meal Program Participation

The district participates in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program, administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These programs establish the nutrition standards our meals must meet for reimbursement.

  • Breakfast
    • Each breakfast meal must offer four food items, including grains/protein, fruits, and milk.
    • To qualify for free breakfast, students must select at least three (3) of the four components offered, and one must be a fruit.
    • Students may select one item from each of the four components if they choose.
  • Lunch
    • Each lunch meal must offer: Meat/Meat Alternatives, Grains, Vegetables, Fruits, and Milk.
    • To receive free lunch, students must select at least three (3) different components, and one of them must be a fruit or vegetable.

A La Carte Options

In addition to full meals, a variety of à la carte items are available for purchase, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, baked snacks, and ice cream novelties. Offerings may vary by school. These items can be purchased with cash or through a student’s meal account.

Allergies and Dietary Needs

If your child has a food allergy or intolerance, please provide a note from your child’s physician and submit it to the school nurse so we can accommodate their dietary needs.

To file a program discrimination complaint, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, AD-3027(link is external), found online at How to File a Program Discrimination Complaint and at any USDA office or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested in the form. To request a copy of the complaint form, call (866) 632-9992. Submit your completed form or letter to USDA by:
