High School hosts mock DWI event
A mock DWI scene unfolded in the Hannibal High School parking lot as an eye-opening learning experience for juniors and seniors in advance of prom and graduation season.
The event is a collaborative effort among the district, local emergency responders and the county STOP-DWI program that takes place every two years. According to high school teacher and SADD Club adviser Lisa Mason, the event is designed to have an impact that lasts far beyond high school.
“The mock DWI is very important to bring awareness to students on just what can happen due to one poor decision,” Mason said. “Our hope is that this event sticks with them and they will never drive a car if impaired.”
The mock scene played out with two cars involved in a head-on collision that resulted in one fatality, several injured passengers and one DWI arrest. Student actors portrayed the drivers and passengers as the storyline followed them from the initial crash scene to the driver’s arrest and eventually to the victim’s funeral.
“The second those bumpers connect, absolutely everybody is affected,” said Oswego County STOP-DWI Coordinator Bob Lighthall. “It’s not just the drunk driver. It’s not just the people in the car. It’s not just the families. It’s the whole community. Be smart. Have a plan.”
