About us

The girls basketball program began in 1971 under the guidance of Mary Louise Shumway.  In 1973 the girls basketball team won the class C-D-E sectional tournament with a win over Frankfort Schulyer.  Mrs. Shumway coached until she retired in 1977.  In 1977 a JV program was started.  Steve Cianfarano began coaching the varsity with Ron Acerra coaching JV.  Mr. Cianfarano remains the varsity coach today with over 400 wins.  Mr. Acerra left coaching after ten years to go into administration and is currently a principal at Dewitt Middle School in Ithaca.  The next couple of years saw two different coaches on the JV level.  In 1988 Glen Trinder took over the coaching duties of the JV team and remains their coach today!

When the competition began Hannibal was a member of the Oswego County League.  They played from January to March.  At that time the season was split with volleyball.  In 1980-81 Hannibal joined the Onondaga County League - South and changed to a full season.  At this point the girls had to decide whether they were going to play basketball or volleyball because they were occurring at the same time (Nov-March).

The varsity girls basketball team has been to the sectional finals six times and won two.  They have won numerous league championships and have been recognized as Team Scholar Athletes each year since the state instituted that recognition award.

Hannibal is currently a member of the Onondaga CD-1, which is now called the PATRIOT NATIONAL  League along with APW, Cato Meridian, Port Byron, Weedsport, & Pulaski.
