Fairley students learn about adaptive sports

Fairley Elementary students received a lesson in physical fitness and adaptability during a recent visit from Move Along Inc.

Representatives from the nonprofit organization discussed their mission of providing adapted recreational opportunities for people who live with disabilities. They noted that inclusive sports help build and develop participants’ self-confidence and self-worth.

Using modified wheelchairs and other equipment, students played basketball, hockey and rode bicycles in the gym. They learned about perseverance and teamwork as they navigated the challenges of limited mobility.

Guest speaker Chloe Joyce, a student at Dennis M. Kenney Middle School, talked to the elementary students about her first-hand experience participating in adaptive sports. Despite being in a wheelchair, Joyce said she isn’t limited by anything, and she encouraged students to push through any challenges.

“Everyone can participate in all different kinds of sports with a little teamwork, ingenuity and lots of special equipment,” Joyce said. “Don’t think you can’t do something just because you’re in a wheelchair.”
