Fairley students celebrate Dr. Seuss

In celebration of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss, Fairley Elementary students participated in literacy activities and dressed in themed outfits during Read Across America Week.

The annual event coincides with Seuss’ birthday: March 2, and promotes reading at school and at home. For Fairley students, the celebration culminated in an assembly with a guest reader and a skit performed by high school students.

“We still celebrate Dr. Seuss because of all the great things he has done,” said reading teacher Kate Babbitt. “His main goal was to make sure every child had a love of reading. Each story teaches us something.”

Hannibal High School students Derek Cuyler, Connor Griffin, Haley Goodman, Alyssa Emmons. Christina Thompson, Jeffrey Fellows and Emily Goodman demonstrated empathy through the story of “The Sneetches.” They talked to the elementary students about reaching out to others and how important it is to ask how someone is feeling.

Following the assembly, students were encouraged to continue reading and share stories with their families.
