Fairley students advance to county book battle

Kids at a desk“In which book do blue dots look silly?”
That question, along with 15 others that were just as specific, were asked to four teams of students at Fairley Elementary School who competed in the annual Battle of the Books event. Teams had just 30 seconds to answer those detailed questions and earned eight points for the correct title and author or five points for the correct title only.
The third- and fourth-grade students studied 10 chapter books throughout the past several months so they could provide correct answers to the most inquisitive questions. Each participant smiled with excitement, gave a high five or let out a squeal each time they and their teammates were right. Classmates, staff members, parents and other supporters also cheered for each team.
Students were nervous as Librarian Marie Smith read half-time scores, all of which were close. They persevered through the second-half of the competition and in the end, the Book Droids were declared winners after achieving 104 points out of a possible 128 points. Team members Olive Somers, Kayden McIntyre and Harley Somers have advanced to the Oswego County Battle of the Books, which will take place in March.
Teacher Kathleen Babbit, who served as their Battle of the Books coach, said she couldn’t be more proud of the girls for their dedication to reading. This is the second year in a row the students and Babbit worked with one another.
The three remaining teams earned 56, 64 and 88 points, all of which Smith said were “fantastic scores.”
“They had the courage to get up in front of the school and answer questions,” Smith said.
For their efforts, each student received a certificate of completion.
