Healthy Family Night at Fairley draws huge crowd

Fairley Elementary School’s 4th annual Healthy Family Night helped families learn that it takes more than physical fitness and healthy eating habits to become healthier children and adults.

The event also encouraged youngsters and their parents/guardians gain self-confidence to complete tasks and make great decisions. Trying new challenges and foods were both welcoming undertakings.

Dozens of children and adults flocked to Healthy Family Night, which was packed with a performance from dance teachers at Kami’s Kix, yoga lessons, hoola hoop practice, fitness activities from Fairley Physical Education Teacher Lynn Halliwell, a visit from PAWS Across Oswego County, arts and crafts, play therapy, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office with child identification cards and healthy foods from TOPS. One of the most popular demonstrations involved students breaking boards with their fists during a visit with folks from Master Pryor’s Taekwondo America.

Students and their families were treated to healthy smoothies from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County and information on the following topics: healthy sleeping habits, helmet safety, fire safety, play therapy and positive social interactions. Fairley’s annual spring book fair was also a huge success during the event.

School psychologist Brittany Meier, who co-organized the event with Fairley counselor Maggie Olon, said she was ecstatic with the turnout, which included Hannibal Central School District Superintendent Christopher Staats, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Accountability Dee Froio and Fairley Elementary Principal Joseph Musa, among several other guests.
