Leonard Earns PE Teacher of the Year Honors

With a commitment to his students and a passion for physical education, Hannibal alumnus Scott Leonard recently received honors as the Central North Zone Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year.

The award, presented by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AHPERD), recognizes individuals for excellence in teaching and overall performance in the disciplines of physical education. Leonard was nominated for his work at Fairley Elementary School, where colleague Lynn Halliwell lauded his contributions.

“It’s awesome that Scott won this award,” Halliwell said. “He is so deserving of this recognition. He is energetic, motivating and fun. I couldn’t ask for a better co-worker.”

Leonard noted he was humbled to receive such a prestigious award and credited retired PE teacher Pete Rossi as his mentor. As both a former student and a colleague, Leonard said Rossi helped him tremendously throughout his career. He also thanked his co-workers and the greater Hannibal community for the support.

“Lynn (Halliwell) has been such a great colleague and co-teacher,” Leonard said. “She’s so supportive of the new technology pieces we’ve added to the curriculum and it’s an honor to receive this award and work with such awesome colleagues.”

Leonard has been a physical education teacher in Hannibal for more than a decade. Throughout that time, he has worked with thousands of students and served as a teacher, mentor and role model.

“I've been very fortunate to teach so many wonderful students here at Hannibal,” Leonard said. “It’s a rewarding career and such an honor to be recognized for doing a job that I truly enjoy.”

The award was presented during a ceremony March 2 in Canastota.
