Fairley PE classes roll out new bowling lesson

Although there is not a bowling alley in Hannibal, Fairley Elementary School students are learning the game and gaining hands-on experience thanks to a Bowler’s Ed initiative.

The New York State Bowling Association, through the Bowler’s Ed in-school bowling program, provided six sets of mobile bowling equipment for Hannibal’s kindergarten through fourth grade physical education classes. The sets are complete with lanes, pins and bowling balls, and come with accompanying curriculum kits. Valued at $2,200, Fairley Elementary School was among 42 schools that received the package.

“Hannibal Home and School and both the Fulton and Oswego bowling alleys wrote letters of support for this program,” said Fairley Elementary physical education teacher Lynn Halliwell. “We were thrilled to get this equipment for our students and we’re looking forward to teaching them the sport of bowling.”

Halliwell and colleague Scott Leonard said they are excited to offer a new form of fitness to their students. The bowling unit is designed to focus on cardiovascular health, coordination and endurance as well as English language arts and mathematics.

“The STEM, ELA, and math resources that are included in the curriculum are amazing,” Halliwell said, noting that the students have embraced the bowling lessons so far.
