Scholarships        

·      The Janet H. Griswold Scholarship is being offered by a national women’s organization known as the P.E.O. Sisterhood.  To be eligible applicants must be female, a U.S. citizen and be in the upper half of their high school class.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Last year they awarded three senior girls from Oswego County awards of close to $1,000.  The deadline to apply is 1/15/09, but they prefer receiving applications by 12/1/08.

·      The College at Brockport awards scholarships up to $4,500 based on GPA and SAT/ACT scores.  To inquire further go to www.brockport.edu/scholarships.

The KFC Scholars Program is dedicated to assisting students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a public institution within their legal state of residence.  Students must be graduating by 8/31/09, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 or higher, be enrolled in a public in-state college or university and be pursuing a bachelor’s degree.  To apply, go on-line at www.kfcscholars.org or stop into the guidance office.  The deadline to apply is 2/10/09.

·      The Ayn Rand Institute offers two essay contest opportunities to students in 8th, 9th or 10th grade and 11th and 12th grades.  Awards range from $30 to $10,000.  For further information stop into guidance or go on-line at www.aynrand.org/teacherkit.  The deadline varies for each award.

·      Dorothea Deitz Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by women in physical education in New York State to provide financial assistance to selected women students planning to major in Physical Education Teacher Education.  These scholarships range from $5,500 to $7,500.  If you are interested stop into guidance or speak with your physical education teacher.  The deadline to apply is 3/1/09.

·      Toyota Community Scholars will be awarding 100 renewable scholarships valued at $10,000 - $20,000 payable over four years to seniors who enroll at a four-year college or university in the United States.  Hannibal High is only allowed to submit one nominee for this scholarship.  Any students interested in applying must get an application from the guidance office and turn them into guidance by 11/20/08 for review.  While academic performance is a prime factor in the selection process, please note that distinguishing characteristics will be the overall impact of the student’s contribution(s) in the areas of community service.

·      Better Business Bureau (BBB) Student of Integrity Award will award the ethics award to a student who best exemplifies the ethical standards set forth by the BBB and its members.  They will award two (2) scholarships of $2,100.  Applicants will be evaluated based on academic achievement, involvement in the community and the merits of an essay.  Hannibal High School can only nominate one student.  Therefore, any interested students may obtain an application from the guidance office and return it to guidance by 12/1/08 for selection.

·      The Empire State Potato Growers, Inc. announce their scholarship in the amount of $500 per year for up to four years of study at a college in New York State.  Selection will be based on undergraduate study in the field of agricultural related majors (i.e. Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, Crop & Soil Sciences, Entomology, Food Sciences, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, and Agricultural Economics), academic achievement and leadership abilities and NYS residency.  Applications are available in the guidance office or on-line at www.nypotatoes.org.  The deadline to apply is 1/15/09.   

 

The Hannibal Free Library and Hannibal Town Hall are recruiting student volunteers for a few events that will take place at the library.  By helping students can list these as community service for college and scholarships applications.  Interested students should contact Ann Mahaney at (315) 564-5658 or email at ammahaney@yahoo.com, or Linda Remig at (315) 564-6643. 

·      Festival of Trees – 11/22 and 11/23 (set up on 11/21/08 at Community Center) at the library.  They need help setting up tables, clean up and crafts with children. 

·      Hannibal Free Library Open House – 1/3/09, from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.  They need help with computer demonstrations, serving refreshments, story reading, and crafts.

·      The Hannibal Winterfest Committee  (at Town Hall) – 2/7 and 2/8/09 - Needs help setting up tables for craft fair and food sales, poster making, registration table on the 8th and photo taking.
