Transitions

One thing that is difficult for high school students to do is make plans for the future - What will I do when I get out of high school? Your school counselor can help you with this but you have to start thinking about what your plans for the future will include - vocational training?, a technical or specialized training program?, or perhaps college? Although participation in these programs can't start until you graduate, the planning stage takes place several years before. You will find on this page several links that can help you plan for the future. One place to start is the VESID site. This link can help you get started thinking about planning for the future.( check out "Career Zone" & Postsecondary Planning

If you are planning to go to college you will probably need to take college entrance exams like the SAT or the ACT. You should check these sites out to see about filing deadlines and how to register online.

The next step is to check out which colleges fit the type of program you are looking for. There are several websites which can be helpful or you can check with your counselor - Mr. Hurlbutt or Ms. Katovich.  One general search engine is called collegelink or you may want to be more specific and check state schools under the SUNY system. Where ever you begin your search it is important to know if the school you have selected has special services for learning disabled students. One of the best places to check for that is in Peterson's Colleges with Programs for Students with Learning Disabilities or Attention Deficit Disorders. This book can be purchased at most larger bookstores or directly on line at Peterson's site.

Good luck getting started on your search and remember the best way to achieve your goal is to start planning early!
